Here at Haunted by Reading, we aren’t just obsessed with paranormal and supernatural fiction. We’re also a little obsessed with the end of the world.

Ok, not the *actual* end of the world because hello, terrifying. But we really like to read dystopian and post-apoc novels. And in recent years, there’s been a surge in a special new subgenre of dystopian that tickles all my reading fancies: Dystopian Urban Fantasy.

It is what you think it is – worlds powered by magic or supernatural beings that are being slowly destroyed by the people – or creatures – in charge. And some plucky human (or otherwise supernatural being) steps up to kick ass and take names.

And then you’re dead.

When sixteen-year-old Kaelyn lets her best friend leave for school without saying goodbye, she never dreams that she might not see him again. Then a strange virus begins to sweep through her small island community, infecting young and old alike. As the dead pile up, the government quarantines the island: no one can leave, and no one can come back.

Cut off from the world, the remaining islanders must fend for themselves. Supplies are dwindling, fatalities rising, and panic is turning into violence. With no cure in sight, Kaelyn knows their only hope of survival is to band together. Desperate to save her home, she joins forces with a former rival and opens her heart to a boy she once feared.

But as the virus robs her of friends and family, Kaelyn realizes her efforts may be in vain. How can she fight an enemy that’s too small to see?

Some people prepare for the end. Other people are thrust into it. No matter how you meet the end of days, you have two options. To be someone who is dying in it, or be someone who is surviving.

In Kremlin Circle, where demon queen Belias sits on a throne built of human blood, beauty can get you killed.

Gadreel was an angel who fell long before the envy curse came to Kremlin Circle. Belias and her demons brought hell to earth, destroying his happiness in the process. Now living in isolation, Gad broods on his wife and daughter’s premature deaths and waits for the world to end.

Then Raphael, right-hand to God, shows up on Gad’s doorstep with a declaration from the Big Man himself: Gad is the only man capable of ending Belias’ reign of terror. Armed with an arcane spell and little else, he must search out the strongest witch in the circle to help him defeat the demon queen.

His problem? The strongest witch in the circle is his wife’s uncle, Yulian, who isn’t happy about the way Gad abandoned him after his niece’s death. Even worse, in the fifty years since the two men last spoke, Yulian adopted a daughter.

And she may be the biggest danger to Gad yet.

Fans of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files and Hugh Howey’s Wool will travel breathlessly through this dystopian society where the demons in charge don’t have the best interests of the people in mind and only magic can save them.

The harvest separates the worthy from the unworthy. Those who pass are destined to continue the human race, and the unworthy are culled.

For years, Eve has been the poster girl for emotional control. But ever since her brother was culled, Eve is finding it difficult to keep the monitor on her wrist an acceptable blue.

The next harvest ceremony is approaching and Eve will do whatever it takes to avoid the same fate as her brother.

Gripping and intriguing, Eve of Eridu explores the lengths that humans will go to in their quest for survival.

This YA dystopian novel is written by award winning speculative writer, Alanah Andrews.

One by one, Senka Hollow residents are falling to the shadows.

So good the shadow touched call her “Reaper.” Relle isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in the name of the Hollow and the sleeping princess she adores.

But all is not well in Senka Hollow – Senka’s power is fading. When someone close to Relle is murdered, an underground infection is exposed: the council is failing, and more than one person in charge has been shadow-touched.

Then Senka rises and death comes to the Hollow.

Seemingly unaffected by the darkness embodied in Senka, Relle must find a way to restore the princess before she destroys the entire population. Her journey will take her deep into her Navajo heritage and make her question everything she knows about being shadow touched.

The only cure is to receive an injection of oDNA, DNA from an Original human that hasn’t been genetically altered. Problem is there aren’t many Originals left.

When seventeen-year-old Sage wakes up in a hospital with no memories, her only clue are the words “Run Now” written on her hand. With a deadly disease threatening to wipe out mankind, Sage must find out who she is and why most people would kill to get their hands on her–before it’s too late.

As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don’t cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn’t fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.

Now, sealed in human form and banished to the DFZ–a vertical metropolis built on the ruins of Old Detroit–Julius has one month to prove he can be a ruthless dragon or kiss his true shape goodbye forever.   Life is harsh. It makes no exceptions. Not even for the innocent.

Outpost Three: a huddle of crumbling buildings choked by a concrete wall. Cracked pavement, rusted metal, splintering boards. Huge robotic Sentries police the streets, but the Ten Laws are broken every time one turns its back.

Eden is determined, smart, and a born survivor. Stripped of her memories and dumped on the streets of the Outpost, slavers and starvation are only the beginning of her problems. A devastating conflict is coming that threatens to consume her world and tear her newfound family apart.

I just wanted to graduate high school. Fighting monsters to save the world was not part of my five-year plan.

I had it all figured out. Graduate high school and head to college. It was just icing that my college of choice also happened to be where my lifelong crush and the gorgeous boy next door, Cohen, was already attending. I had already been accepted.
Everything was working out perfectly.

The only problem was that ‘perfect’ didn’t involve a freakin’ invasion. So, when everything went dark and monsters, literal monsters, fell from the sky, I had no idea what to do.

Hey, I’m not your perfect dystopian heroine. Hell, I’m not even your everyday human.

It took some time, and a bit of work, but now instead of graduating and following Cohen to college I am now hunting massive winged demon… things.

Worse yet, any chance of a happily-ever-after goes to pot when my demon hunting turns into boyfriend rescuing, and I have to risk it all and go into the Dark.
Boys, am I right?

One minute everything is on track, and the next… well, it’s the end of the world.

My name is Lex, and I guess I hunt monsters now.

  1. Maria Korsman

eagerly awaiting more from “the wall” series but have recently re-read the first book in the Rissa series by FMBusby… a yellowed book from my shelf from the 1980’s and I’m going to re-read the rest soon. I’d be interested to know if anyone else remembers this author/books

  2. Amanda Curley

The Tainted by Frost Kay was one of the best Dystopian Urban Fantasy I’ve read recently. It’s rich with imagination, world-building, and awesomeness!

  3. Lavender

I just realised that I don’t read dystopian UF all that often. Probably Matched by Ally Condie a few years back but that did little to hold my interest after the first book.
