Walk in the shadows with dark #UrbanFantasy and #Paranormal #Romance in these #MustRead #books!

The older I get, and the more exposed I become to the world at large, the more I realize just how messed up it is. The world is kind of a nightmare, isn’t it? War, terror, fear, selfishness, misdeeds, and a lot of people doing a lot of awful things to other people. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like we’ve lost the best spark of humanity – the part that held kindness, compassion, and generosity.

So I guess that’s why my taste in books has skewed heavily to novels that touch the DARK side. I want my angels fallen and struggling to rediscover their purpose. I want my worlds on the brink of extinction. I want nice people to do bad things for the greater good – not because they’re awful, but because the line between saving the world and dooming everybody is fifty shades of gray (hahahaha, I’m funny.)

And the most important part? I want to see that negativity overcome – even if it means burning everything to the ground by the end and rising from the ashes. Because those are the stories that grip us and never leave us.

After her brutal past escaping the hordes of ghosts vying for her attention, she spends her reclusive existence melting down iron into bite-sized pieces. Whether alloy or wrought, ancient paper clips or nails, consuming iron is the only thing that keeps the ghosts away.

But when Absidy’s sister goes missing in deep space, a dangerous place brimming with rogue planets, ship-eating nebulas, and vicious aliens, Absidy vows to find her. She leaves her safe haven and boards the first ship she can that’s on a direct route to deep space—a ship that turns out to be haunted.

To keep the malicious ghosts from killing her, the alluring bad boy pilot gifts her a small bundle of all the iron on the ship. But their growing relationship is tested with the crew’s prying eyes and hidden secrets.

While the ship sails into deep space, it’s not just her sister’s life that Absidy fears for. It’s her own, as well. Especially since her stash of iron has shrunk to zero.

But time is running out to fix the barrier and find a demon cure. With supernaturals everywhere in danger, and the balance between good and evil tipped for the worst, Jade must choose between her own eternal afterlife…or the living world she so desperately wants to be a part of.

In Kremlin Circle, where demon queen Belias sits on a throne built of human blood, beauty can get you killed.

Gadreel was an angel who fell long before the envy curse came to Kremlin Circle. Belias and her demons brought hell to earth, destroying his happiness in the process. Now living in isolation, Gad broods on his wife and daughter’s premature deaths and waits for the world to end.

Then Raphael, right-hand to God, shows up on Gad’s doorstep with a declaration from the Big Man himself: Gad is the only man capable of ending Belias’ reign of terror. Armed with an arcane spell and little else, he must search out the strongest witch in the circle to help him defeat the demon queen.

His problem? The strongest witch in the circle is his wife’s uncle, Yulian, who isn’t happy about the way Gad abandoned him after his niece’s death. Even worse, in the fifty years since the two men last spoke, Yulian adopted a daughter.

And she may be the biggest danger to Gad yet.

Fans of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files and Hugh Howey’s Wool will travel breathlessly through this dystopian society where the demons in charge don’t have the best interests of the people in mind and only magic can save them.

A supernatural apocalypse is brewing. And only secret magic can defeat it.

Alexandra Shaw may be an elemental mage, but she prefers the quiet life, running her struggling occult bookshop. With secrets of her own and a magical lineage shrouded in mystery, she keeps a low profile. But when a New York banker is found gruesomely murdered with an ancient symbol carved into his chest — one representing a cult of demon hunters long thought extinct — the supernatural community, including the Magic Council, is stunned.

Alex reluctantly joins the investigation to keep her shop afloat, but tensions between gods and demons continue to rise and threaten to break into a devastating war. To diffuse the situation, the Council assigns a fiercely powerful and sexy fae to the case.

Ancient cults, demons, gods, ritualistic murders, a tempting fae — and as if all that weren’t bad enough, now someone’s trying to kill her…

Dead. Not Gone. Definitely not silent.

My name is Everly, and I’m haunted by the dead. Or maybe hunted is a better word since it seems the dead want to make me one of them. Luckily, I have Shadow on my side, the formidable, powerful being who’s been with me since the start of all the madness. He never speaks. But I know he’s my protector, slaying the demons that get too close and saving me from whatever seeks to harm me, even myself. I just want a normal life. But I’m not normal. And nothing is as it seems. Not even Shadow. He’s so much more than I imagined.

My fear and destiny collide to bring me to the doorstep of a place I never dreamed possible. I won’t be alone. Shadow will be there. And so will they. The dead. Because I’m never alone.

Dead Silence is book one in The Everlasting Chronicles. Reader Discretion advised due to dark subject matter.

 Survive the night. Stay alive.

Some girls have all the luck, but for Suzy Raven, a paranormal investigator who works with the different pantheons, luck just ran out.

Convicted of murdering three humans, when the prison doors slammed shut behind her, she counted down the days until she’d be released.

Without any witnesses and with innocent blood on her hands, she was supposed to rot in that cell, until her lawyer found a way out: an opportunity.

She’ll have to spend the night in the old MacGregor estate. It was supposed to be haunted, a place of brutal evil. But why fear something imaginary, when there was enough to fear in reality?

If she can survive the night, she can walk away scot-free.

After all, monsters aren’t real, or are they?

Sometimes super powers aren’t all they’re cracked up to be…

Kate has enough problems – a boss that’s a little too friendly, a sex life that’s non-existent, and a cat with zero tolerance for late meals. The last thing she needs is to be kidnapped, even if it is by a hot Brit.

Afterwards, she’s mysteriously returned and has no memory of what happened. She learns, with the help of an eccentric sexy woman, that she’s been modified – given a power unique to her talents. Sounds cool, right? It would be if she knew how to use it without killing everyone around her…

Modified is a funny, sexy, geeky romp about the trouble of acquiring an unexpected and inherently evil super power. Full of offbeat characters, profanity, and just enough deliciously wicked thoughts, you’ll love this fun series. With the box set edition, you get all five volumes for one low price!

  1. The BEST dark fantasy I’ve read recently is Amy Sevan’s Pledge Of Ashes, book 1 of the Rise Series. This book has everything. Angels. Demons. Action. Sexy ass heroes, and a kickass heroine with a sassy mouth and a hard life.

Dark Fantasy fiction definitely draws me in. Some of the best book characters are the complicated ones, the ones who fight the dark inside and out, who aren’t perfect, don’t make perfect choices, but they try. Love this post.

Right now I am reading The Dark Chamber by Stirling. It is rather dark because of the fact that it involves spying, war, chemical warfare, revenge (and other) killing, but has its light moments. It is apparently the first in a series by an author that I pick up automatically, so will have to see where it goes.

I must say, if I didn’t know anything else about the books, the covers would be an immediate attraction. I find them all so alluring. I don’t have any real favorites in dark fantasies or romances, but one book that come to mind first is Tim Powers’ The Drawing of the Dark.

I had the great honor to read an advance copy of Harper A Brooks Death Wish (you can see my earlier review on Goodreads & BookBub under Christine Lee) and I LOVED IT! Gave it a well-deserved 5 stars.

I love reading and dark urban fantasy and paranormal romances are among my favorite genres because it’s a chance to escape the bleak reality. There’s always this fascinating and dangerous bridge between our world and any other fantastic realm. It’s a place many of us would like to know more about…which we do by the talented hands of urban fantasy authors. I’ve read the action-packed The Descent Series by S M Reine and recommend it!
